Built through successive layers of addition, removal and revision, Counterpoise brings areas of visual weight into tension with a lighter, more fragmented field. Dark, earthy passages anchor the composition, while pale greys, softened whites and unexpected accents of pink interrupt and redistribute that weight.
Traces of earlier decisions remain visible throughout the surface: marks are covered, interrupted and allowed to reappear. The resulting structure feels balanced without becoming static, holding together elements that remain deliberately unresolved.
Part of Rhythms of the Unspoken, an ongoing body of work in which composition emerges through the process of painting rather than from a predetermined image.
