The marks in this painting do not quite fall into line. Sharp accents interrupt broad pink passages, and ochre and green introduce turns that keep the eye alert. The softer layers give these differences room to coexist. There is a slightly unruly pleasure here: a rhythm made interesting by the moments that refuse to follow the beat.
